Which branch of circulation supplies most of the brain?
Anterior circulation
Where does the Anterior Cerebral Artery (ACA) run?
In the longitudinal fissure above the corpus callosum.
What does the ACA supply?
- Medial aspect of frontal and parietal lobes
- Cingulate cortex
- Corpus callosum
What are the 2 major branches of the ACA?
- Callosomarginal A. (above cortex)
2. Pericallosal A. (above corpus callosum)
What are the 3 divisions of the Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA)?
- Stem
- Lenticulostriate arteries - Superior division
- everything above sylvian fissure. - Inferior division
- everything below sylvian fissure
What does the MCA supply?
- Lateral frontal lobe
- Lateral parietal lobe
- Insular cortex
- Medial and lateral temporal lobes
- Subcortical deep structures
- Basal ganglia
- internal capsule
- limbic structures
Where does the Anterior Choroidal Artery arise from?
Off the internal carotid artery near where the MCA arises.
What does the anterior choroidal artery supply?
- Choroid plexus and lateral ventricle
- Optic tract
- Deep structures of telencephalon
- Posterior limb of internal capsule
- Portions of basal ganglia
- Portions of thalamus
What is the circle of willis?
Anastomosis between ICA’s and Basilar artery.
Provides collateral blood flow between anterior and posterior circulations of brain as well as right and left hemispheres.
What are the components of the circle of willis?
- Anterior cerebral arteries
- Anterior communicating artery
- connects two ACAs - Posterior communicating arteries
- connects MCAs to PCAs - Posterior cerebral arteries
What does the posterior communicating arteries supply?
Diencephalon structures
- thalamus
- infundibulum
- hypothalamus
- pituitary
Where does the Posterior Cerebral Artery arise from?
From the basilar artery and travels posteriorly to occiput.
The PCA has superficial branches. What are they and what do they supply?
- Anterior inferior temporal artery
- Posterior inferior temporal artery
- Calcarine arteries
Supply
- Medial and inferior occipital lobes
- Inferior temporal lobes
The PCA had deep branches. What are they and what do they supply?
- Tuberothalamic A’s
- Thalamogeniculate A’s
- Posterior Choroidal A’s
Supply
- subcortical structures = midbrain, thalamus, subthalamic structures
Where does the Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) arise from and what does it supply?
Arises at the level of medulla from the vertebral artery.
Supplies = lateral medulla and inferior cerebellum
Where does the anterior spinal artery arise and what does it supply?
Arises from the vertebral artery.
Supplies = medial medulla and the anterior 2/3 of spinal cord
Where does the posterior spinal artery arise from and what does it supply?
Branches off the posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Supplies = dorsal medial medulla and posterior 1/3 of spinal cord
What does the basilar artery arise from?
The vertebral artery
Where does the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) arise at? What does it supply?
Arises right after basilar artery forms at the level of the caudal pons.
Supplies = lateral caudal pons and cerebellum
What do the labyrinthine arteries arise from? What do they supply?
Branches form AICA
Supplies = cochlea and vestibular apparatus
Where do the pontine arteries arise from? What do they supply?
They are small circumferential arteries that arise from the basilar artery.
Where do the superior cerebellar arteries arise from and what do they supply?
Arise from the basilar artery. Are the most rostral branch of the basilar artery prior to the PCA.
Supplies = cerebellum and rostral dorsolateral pons
What the segmental radicular arteries? What are they important for?
Branches off the descending thoracic aorta.
Important for their vascularization of spinal nerve roots.
The thoracic radicular artery supplies what structures?
It is supplemental blood supply to cervical and thoracic cord.
The great radicular artery of adamkiewicz supplies what structures?
Major blood supply to lumbar and sacral cord.
