Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
When two things are measured in order to identify if there is a relationship between them
What is used to describe a relationship?
single numerical value
What are the types of correlation?
- positive
- negative
- no correlation
- curvilinear
What is the relationship of a positive correlation?
both variables increase together
What is the relationship of a negative correlation?
As one variable increases, the other decreases
What is the relationship of a no correlation?
no relationship between the variables
What is the relationship of a curvilinear correlation?
The relationship is predictive although it is not linear
its curved
define intervening variable
A variable that comes between two other variables, which is used to explain the association between those 2 variables
What is a correlation co-efficient?
Tells us how strong the correlation is
A number between 0-1
- nearer to 1, the stronger the correlation
what does a correlation co-efficient have in front of it?
a sign which tells us whether the correlation is positive or negative
state a difference between correlations and experiments
experiments = controls/manipulates independant variable
correlations = no manipulations of the 2 variables
