correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
An association illustrating the strengths and direction between to co-variables
What is a scattergram?
- Plotting a correlation on to a scattergram
-One co-variable on x-axis other on y-axis
What are the three types of correlation?
Positive correlation
Negative correlation
Zero correlation
What is a positive correlation?
Co-variables rise or fall together
What is a negative correlation?
Co-variables rise and the other falls
What is a zero correlation?
No relationship between the two variables
What are the differences between experiments and correlations?
Experiment = manipulates IV and record DV
Correlation = no manipulation so no cause and effect
Experiment = controls extraneous variables
Correlation = Does not control extraneous variables (maybe a third variable)
Strength of correlation:
- Can suggest a future hypothesis
- Economical = less time consuming (don’t have to control the environment)
Limitation of correlation:
No cause and effect = intervening variable that explains the relationship
Methods may be flawed in measuring the of variables = low in reliability
