correlations Flashcards
1
Q
correlation
A
a mathematical technique in which a researcher investigates an association between co-variables
2
Q
co-variables
A
the variables investigated within a correlation eg height and weight
they are not referred to as the independent and dependent variables because a correlation investigates association between variables rather than trying to show a cause and effect relationship
3
Q
correlation eval
A
- useful preliminary tool for research - strength and direction of relationship provides precise and quantifiable measure of how two variables are related
- starting points to assess possible patterns
- quick and economic as no need for controlled environment and no manipulation of variables
- secondary data can be used so less time-consuming
- tell us how but not why - lack of control
- cannot show cause and effect
- direction of effect is an issue
- intervening variables
- misused and misinterpreted
