Correlation Flashcards
1
Q
Correlation
A
A method used to assess the degree to which two co-variables are related.
2
Q
Advantages
A
+ Useful way to conduct a preliminary analysis on data.
+ Provides a means of looking at continuous variables and determining whether the relationship is sig.
3
Q
Disadvantages
A
- Cannot show a cause and effect relationship as there is no IV that has been deliberately altered.
- If co-variables are correlated, one may be causing the changes in the other but we do not know the direction of the possible effect e.g. a positive correlation between amount of violent videos watched and aggression. It could be that instead of the videos increasing aggression, aggressive people choose to watch the violent .videos.
4
Q
What graph can show correlation?
A
Scatter diagram
5
Q
Positive Correlation
A
Two variables increase together,
6
Q
Negative Correlation
A
As one variable increases, the other decreases.
7
Q
Or there is…
A
No correlation.
