coronary artery disease Flashcards
what is CAD?
narrowing or occlusion of coronary vessels by 50% or more
what are the three most predictable risk factors for CAD?
dislipidemia, hypertention, and cigarette smoking
what is displidemia?
abnormal lipoprotein levels in the blood
what is the purpose of LDL and HDL?
to transport water insoluble molecules like triglycerides and cholesterol
what are LDL’s?
made by the liver and transport lipids from the liver to adipose tissue for storage
what are HDL’s?
transport lipids from the adipose tissue to the liver for degeneration (higher in density than LDL’s-more protein and less fat)
how does hypertension cause CAD?
HTN damages the blood vessels and promotes atherosclerosis
how does cigarette smoking contribute to CAD?
the metabolites in cigarette smoke damage blood vessels
what are the other factors of CAD?
hyperhomocysteinemia and diabetes mellitus
how many of those with type 2 diabetes have CAD?
75%
