atherosclerosis Flashcards
what does Is the development of atherosclerosis?
injury to the endothelium
what can cause atherosclerosis?
HTN, chemicals in cigarette smoke, infectious agents, and shear forces of blood
what can atherosclerosis lead to?
HTN, CAD, cerebrovascular accident, peripheral artery disease
what are the stages of atherosclerosis
fatty streak
fibrinous plaque
complicated lesion
fatty streak:
Endothelial damage is followed by migration of macrophages and smooth muscle cells (SMC) into the endothelium. macrophages release free radials that steal electrons from LDL’s. LDL’s then can move into the vessel. Both macrophages and SMCs ingest low density lipoproteins (LDLs). Macrophages and SMCs become foam cells once they’ve ingested the LDLs
fibrinous plaque:
collagen fibers are laid down forming a cap of fibrous tissue. and the plaque grows. Vessels become further obstructed.
