Core Terminology 1: DNA Code of Life Flashcards
Polymer
large, organic molecule, made up of smaller molecules called, monomers
Monomers
building blocks of polymers
Nucleic acids
Polymers, large organic molecules found inside cells (DNA & RNA)
Nucleotides
monomers of nucleic acids, made up of 3 parts: phosphate group + pentose sugar + nitrogen base
DNA
- deoxyribonucleic acid,
- occurs inside nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts;
- carries genetic information and controls cell metabolism
RNA
- ribonucleic acid;
- found in the nucleolus, cytoplasm and ribosomes;
- plays role in protein synthesis
Ribose
sugar found in RNA
Deoxyribose
sugar found in DNA
Hydrogen bond
weak bond between nitrogen bases
Double helix
natural shape of DNA
Genes
a segment of a chromosome that controls each characteristic of an organism
Chromosome
a linear collection of genes made up of DNA & proteins(histones)
Genetic code
the sequence of bases in DNA
- Genome
all the genes of an organism
Amino acids
monomers of proteins
Peptide bond
bonds between amino acids
Dipeptide
two amino acids
Tripeptide
3 amino acids
Polypeptide
more than 3, less than 50 amino acids
Base triplet
three bases that represents an amino acid on a DNA molecule
Codon
three bases that represents an amino acid on a mRNA molecule
Anti-codon
three bases that represents an amino acid on a tRNA molecule
mRNA
- messenger RNA
- carries information on the sequence of amino acids, from the DNA in the nucleus, to the ribosomes, in the cytoplasm
tRNA
- transfer RNA
- picks up amino acids in cytoplasm and transfers it to the ribosomes, for the formation of proteins
rRNA
- ribosomal RNA
- helps to bind mRNA to ribosomes
Transcription
process where mRNA copies the pattern for amino acids from the DNA, in the nucleus
Translation
process where tRNA reads the code on the mRNA for amino acids sequence, and picks up the amino acids in the cytoplasm & transfer it to the ribosomes
Mutation
change in the DNA of an organism
DNA profiling
using DNA to identify people
Non-coding DNA
section of a DNA molecule that never gets transcribed into mRNA and is not used in protein synthesis
