Meanings of Exercise
How you view exercise will have a positive or negative impact on your likelihood to participate in it
Exercise as a form of physical activity
Only movement that results in some form of energy expenditure, e.g. walking to class - playing a sport (varies)
Physical Activity
Any movement that results in some expenditure of energy
Exercise
Planned, structured and repetitive bodily movement. It is performed to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness. Exercise is as subset of physical activity
Physical Fitness
Defined as a general state of good health, resulting from regular physical activity and a health diet
Light Exercise
Activity that requires approximately three to four times as much energy as rest
Moderate Exercise
Activity that requires approximately five to sic times much energy as rest
Vigorous Exercise
Activity that requires seven times or more energy as rest
Low Intensity
At this level the person is able to sing while doing the activity
Moderate Intensity
Target heart rate is 50-70% of the maximal heat rate. Normal conversation can be held while performing the activity
Vigorous Intensity
Target heart rate is 70-85% of the maximal heart rate. There is insufficient breath to carry on conversation while exercising
Target Heart Rate (THR)
A predetermined pulse rate to be obtained during exercise and is expressed as a percentage of maximum heart rate
Exercise and its Relationship to Fitness
Planned, structured voluntary movement performed to maintain or improve one or more components of fitness, e.g aerobic training program
WHO Defines fitness as ‘the ability to carry out daily tasks with vigour and alertness, without undue fatigue and with enough reserve energy to enjoy leisure time pursuits and to meet unforeseen emergencies’.
Changing Attitudes to Fitness
As technology was introduced into the work place and homes, physical labour/activity minimized. Then in 1970 and 1980s there was a fitness boom as the more sedentary lifestyle increases the incidence of diseases. Early 2000s there has been and increase in the proportion of teen that undertake sufficient physical activity, this decreased in 2003
