economic recession - supply in demand - people no longer wanted weapons and artillery but household supplies and regular things - artillery damaged soldiers - no jobs for them

named by james weldon johnson - black soldiers seen as a threat to the US so when they came home they were lynched and murdered - rise of KKK - 25 cities torn apart 100s killed - black citizens begged for help - department said they couldn’t intervene/do anything - johnston brothers
Jazz and Harlem Renaissance
jazz became really popular - white press labeled it harlem renaissance bc started in places like harlem in NY - cotton clubs and other places started having black jazz entertainers
Prohibition and it’s results
nationwide ban on alcohol created speakeasies which led to people getting so drunk that they were murdering people
Roaring 20s and Breaking Boundaries
time of economic success and women’s rights - cities got bigger and more important - jazz got very popular and other inventions
Life of Wealthy
lived on wall Street and 5th avenue - lived very well with at least 8 maids - Broadway, boats and cotton clubs were wealthy treats
Cotton Club
club for whites that was very popular - people came from all over - had black jazz entertainers but otherwise it was whites only
Lower east side and European Immigrants
lived a simple life - ethnically diverse - very cheap but long work weeks - European Immigrants weren’t wanted - treated the same as usual
Rural America
quiet life - simple lived like parents/grandparents - didn’t have trends the big cities did
Electricity
revolutionary - new possibilities/jobs - started in big cities - rural america
Cars
incredible - changed lives - efficiency - newfound freedom - people could go anywhere - spent billions on roads etc
Advertising and Credit
roadside advertising - consumer concept - people could buy stuff anywhere with credit cards - start of debt
Radio
national phenomenon - everyone was listening to the same thing - things got more popular like jazz - communal exercise like social media
Women - Flappers - Vamps
shorter dresses and hair - more makeup and freedom - 19th amendment - wanted to go as far as possible - became successful without testing limits - vamps didn’t care
Reaction to Women
rural america didn’t have these trends - alien ideas - didn’t want women to have this freedom

John t. scopes - taught darwinism theories - uproar bc people wanted the bible to be right - John found guilty
Nativism and Intolerance
People wanted the future inventions but also wanted the opinions of 1850 - immigrants were treated poorly and nativism made a surge

group of white supremacists - lynched and murdered black people - 4 million members - portrayed as heroes in the birth of a nation
