Pulmonary Rehabilitation (a program for patients with chronic lung disease)
Big difference/reduction in disability associated.
- improve adherence to treatment
- decrease frequency and severity of symptoms
- improve mood and motivation
- improve quality of life
THROUGH EXERCISE AND EDUCATION
Exercise intolerance
One of the main reasons of limited participation of daily activities
Most limiting COPD symptoms:
- dyspnoea
- fatigue
Cause of reduced exercise tolerance often complex and multifactorial
Draw cycle of inactivity

Programme structure
6-8weeks
2 classes per week and 1-2 home sessions
In a hospital or community venue
Not to fix, but give the tools for long term
Is COPD an isolated issue?
No, usually there are multiple conditions that need to be managed. Also co-morbidities
MRC test
Quantifies ones breathlessness, 5 is the worst
6 minute exercise walk test
Normal ~ 1km
Goals in pulmonary rehabilitation
Really important to be meaningful for that patient, so they will stick to it!
Will a patients spirometry change much?
No. Damage to lung function is permanent, we work more on exercise tolerance, breathing, education etc
