COPD Flashcards
chronic inflammation resulting in narrowing of airways; slowly progressive disease of airflow obstruction
COPD
risk for COPD
smoking, environmental, occupational exposure, age, genetic abnormalities
pulmonary symptoms COPD
all worsening over time:
- cough
- sputum production
- dyspnea
acute change beyond day-to-day variations from baseline
exacerbation
corticosteroids can lead to
elevated BG
during exacerbagions, it is common to have
respiratory acidosis
deep breathing to improve breathing
diaphragmatic
used when experiencing SOB, helps promote CO2 elimination
pursed-lips
reversible diffuse airway inflammation
asthma
triggers of asthma attacks:
airway irritants, exercise, stress, meds, viral resp infections, GERD
drug of choice for exercise-induced asthma
quick immediate relief drugs
measuring highest amount of airflow during forced expiration
peak flow monitoring
rapid onset, severe, and persistent asthma that doesn’t respond to conventional therapy
status asthmaticus
genetic condition characterized by thick, viscious secretions in lung, panceas, liver, intestine, reproductive tract, increased salt production in sweat gland secretions
cystic fibrosis
s/s:
- coughing
- wheezing
- abdominal pain
- wt loss
- infertility
- pancreatitis
