Cooperative Learning Flashcards
What is quality physical education
quality physical education (QPE) is the planned, progressive, inclusive learning experience that forms part of the curriculum in early years, primary and secondary education. In this respect, QPE acts as the foundation for a lifelong engagement in physical activity and sport. The learning experience offered to children and young people through physical education lessons should be developmentally appropriate to help them acquire the psychomotor skills, cognitive understanding, and social and emotional skills they need to lead a physically active life
what are the ways of learning in PE
we need ways of teaching that promote physical, cognitive, social and effective outcomes
what were the department of educations aims for PE
- competition
- confidence and enjoyment
- skilled performance
- tactical knowledge / use of strategies
- reflection and analysis
- interpersonal skills
what is a student centered approach
student centered approaches entail developing students ability to become their own teachers and supporting them to know how to evaluate knowledge claims, how to learn, how to collaborate, how to seek help, how to become assessment capable, how to be resilient (particularly in the face of cognitive challenges), and aiding students to know what to do when they do not know what to do
what is cooperative learning
a student centered pedagogical model that, through its essential elements (or non-negotiables), explores the socio-cultural significance of human movement through the use of individual and group learning outcomes to enhance student development, interaction and task mastery within the physical, cognitive, social and affective domains
what does student centered mean
learning is driven by the students and students are encouraged to teach each other. the teacher offers direction for learning but students create their own learning experiences
what is a pedagogical model
provides a ‘design specification’ for teaching. this means that specific, but flexible, teaching practices are provided that ensure the learning outcomes of the model are met
what are essential elements
are part of the design specification and are the key teaching and learning practices that should be implemented within each lesson
what is group learning
students work in groups of 4-5 members. in groups, students are dependent on each other to learn, and the phrase used is that they ‘sink or swim together’
what is physical, cognitive, social and effective learning
learning outcomes are on par with one another. this means that in order to learn in physical and cognitive domains, social and affective learning should also be taking place
what are the three dominant types of learning
- cooperative (we achieve together)
- positive interdependence (goals are positively related)
- promotive interactions
- competitive (I win, you lose)
- negative interdependence (goals are negatively related)
- bungling interactions
- individual (teacher led)
- no interdependence (no shared goals)
- no / limited interactions
what are the five essential elements
- positive interdependence (pupils depend on one another to succeed
- individual accountability (each pupil is assessed to show involvement)
- promotive (face to face) interaction (time together)
- interpersonal and small group skills (free and easy communication)
- group processing (open dialogue and group discussions about learning)
what are the different roles a student could take on
- coach
- equipment manager
- recorder
- camera person
- encourager
how many different student types interact during PE lessons
- sporty: students who played for sports teams, engaged, always brought kit and were doing sports leaders
- non-sporty: disengaged, hated PE, disruptive, did not bring PE kit
what demonstrates a good physical learner
- competent movers - broad range of skills in a broad range of activities
- cooperative learning enhances the intensity of games play, students have more attempts at different activities
