USSR wanted to remain dominant communist over china
USA didnt wnat any other countires to develop nuclear weapons

Washington-Moscow Hotline

A

June 1963
Direct communication link between Kremlin and the White House.
Made to avoid delays in communication, highlighted by the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Before this communication took a long time.
Could only be used in emergencies, but 24/7.
Not used by JFK or Khrushchev, but used by Johnson in aleritng the soviets the USA were considering sending air support to Israel.
New spirit of cooperation.

The Moscow Test Ban Treaty

A

Signed in August 1963, after several years of negotiations.
Both superpowers, didnt want to be seen as giving in to the other.
US public were happy to limit the use of nuclear weapons, reinforced by keendys speech.
Didnt ban underground test as too hard go differentiate from an earthquake but did ban all above ground under wanter and outer space testing of nuclear weapons.
Signed by USSR, US and Britain.
China and France failed to sign.
But signatories realised the dangers of nuclear war and it opened dicussions for futher limitations on nuclear weapons.

The Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty

A

July 1968
Kennedy administration still producing ICBMS and SLBMS
USSR developed technology to intercept missiles, Anti- Ballistic Missiles
When USA developed MIRVS, soviets keen to negotiate, their technology couldn’t stop MIRVS
Also arms race was extremely expensive for both sides
China successfully tetsed nuclear bomb October 1964
USA, USSR and Britian signed treaty.
Wouldnt help any other states produce nuclear weapons or give to them.
Still could use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes such as fuel.
