Yalta Conference

USSR had liberated many European states from nazi occupation
Agreed:
Germany divided, UN, Declaration of Liberated Europe
All had very different views
Agreed on free elections, Stalin didn’t follow with Poland.
Potsdam conference
17 July-1 August
Truman, Atlee, Stalin- change in leadership
Day after us atomic bomb- diplomatic leverage
No long term blue print
Agreed: Germany demilitarised, USSR get reparations, Germany become a single economic unit.

Completed by 1948
Poland Hungary Bulgaria Romania Albania and Czechoslovakia
Wanted to create puppet leaders to Moscow
Poland- pro- Stalin Lublin govt created- Stalin went against yalta agreements.
Appeared to use free multi-party elections June 1946-but they were rigged.
Yugoslavia- originally under soviet control-wouldn’t be puppets- June 1948 expelled from cominform.

Wanted USA to be more aggressive on foreign policy- said Stalin was vilanising us and Britain.

Suggesting USSR are trapping Eastern Europe
“ a high measure of control from Moscow”
Soviet response to Iron Curtain
Felt threatened
Molotov said us imperialistic and not following DofLE, agreed at Yalta.
Truman Doctrine and Greek Civil War

Greek communists vs monarchists
Britain stopped providing aid (Feb 1947)- looked to us
Created Truman doctrine- reinforced containment policy and gave economic aid.
Designed to protect democracy and freedom
Allowed better trade for us
Cominform
September 1947
Communists representatives met in Poland
To make sure communist states in Europe functioned as a united whole under Moscow.
Marshall Plan
June 1947
Clayton worried bad economies in Europe would affect us
George marshal- 5 June, European recovery program
Provided 13.5 billion to 16 countries- top uk and France.
Conditions: some aid had to be spent on us imports
Created a pro-us European bloc
Offered to all states including ussr
Soviets saw it as us imperialism
Created more division between 2 powers
