What is Grammatical Agreement?

A

The concept that words in a sentence must agree on number (Singular/Plural), Gender (feminine/Masculine) and person (First, second third). Agreement Errors appear in three different forms: SUBJECT-VERB, NOUN-PRONOUN, and PRONOUN-ANTECEDENT.

A

When the Noun which a pronoun is replacing is Singular or Plural, so must the pronoun
Correct: Steve is proud of his dog. (Sing to sing)
Incorrect: Steve is proud of their dog. (Sing to plural)
Correct: James and Taylor said their dog was big.
Incorrect: James and Taylor said his dog was big.

A

Watch out for sentences where the modifers are positions as to confuse what is being said.
Strolling all the beach, a wave suddenly drenched us. (Sounds like the wave is doing the strolling.)

If a subtle pause sounds better, use a comma.

1. Before coordinating conjuctions (FANBOYS for,and, nor, but, or, yet, so) in a compound sentence (sentence made of two clauses.
