What is the name of the process by which land was
distributed in medieval England?
Subinfeudation.
Land was meant to be passed down the Feudal system from King to Barons (tenants-in-chief) to Knights, and Peasants renting land.
What did Edward order to establish how land had been distributed?
Hundred Rolls census. It proved that land was changing ownership unofficially.
What was the problem with subinfeudation?
Barons had begun to gift land to other barons as parts of dowries.
Some barons also gave their land to knights, making illegal mesne lords.
What new process did Edward introduce to try and solve the
problems of subinfeudation?
Substitution - All land had to be recorded as a financial transaction.
