Control of Sexual Behaviour Flashcards
1
Q
Appetitive Behaviour
A
Behaviour aimed at finding and obtaining a sexual partner
2
Q
External Stimuli
A
- External stimuli that adds inclination towards consummatory behaviour or appetitive behaviour
- Usually related to opposite-sex conspecifics
- Can be chemical stimuli we’re not consciously aware of (pheromones)
- Can also be learned and of different sensory modalities
3
Q
Internal Motivation
A
- Hormones
- Brain mechanisms
4
Q
Pheromone
A
- Species-typical molecules that trigger a specific response in another animal of the same species
- Detected by the vomeronasal organ
5
Q
Vomeronasal Organ
A
The organ to detect pheromones in mammals
6
Q
Olfactory Epithelium
A
The organ to detect pheromones in humans (and pigs?)
7
Q
Androstadienone
A
- A steroid that is present in male semen and sweat
- Triggers alertness, good mood and sexual arousal in women (but poor mood in men)
8
Q
Estratetraene
A
- A steroid that can be found in women’s urine
- Activates male, but not female hypothalamic areas
9
Q
Medial Amygdala
A
Integrates stimuli and evaluates their sexual salience
10
Q
Anterior Cingulate Cortex
A
Involved in stimulating sexual interest
11
Q
Insula
A
Involved in stimulating sexual interest
12
Q
Orbitofrontal Cortex
A
Involved in inhibiting sexual interest
13
Q
Prefrontal Cortex
A
Involved in inhibiting sexual interest
14
Q
Consummatory Behaviour
A
Behaviour of the actual sexual act
15
Q
Excitement
A
- First stage of arousal
