control of blood glucose Flashcards
1
Q
increase in blood glucose
A
- increase is detected by receptors in the pancreas
- Beta cells in the islets of Langerhans secrete insulin
- Insulin binds to receptors in liver and muscle cells, increasing there permeability to glucose
Then 3 possible things can happen:
–> more glucose can be absorbed by facilitated diffusion
–> glycogenesis
–> increased respiration
2
Q
decrease in blood glucose
A
- receptors in pancreas detect decrease
- Alpha cells in islets of Langerhans secrete glucagon
- glucagon binds to receptors on liver cells
- then 3 possible things can happen:
- -> decrease in respiration
- -> glycogenolysis
- -> gluconeogenesis
