What are 3 methods of taking combined hormonal contraceptives and how often are they administered?
Pill (daily), patch (weekly) and vaginal ring (monthly)
If break out bleeding where to occur with continuous use of the CHC pill, what would be advised?
Abstinence from the pill for 4-7 days
Does the vaginal ring have to in place throughout the 3wks for it to remain effective?
No; can be removed for <3hrs a day (e.g. during intercourse) without an effect on its contraceptive efficacy
How do progesterone only contraceptives work with regards to contraception?
Primarily through thickening of cervical mucus; role in suppression of ovulation and creating a inhospitable endometrium
What advise should be given to patients taking POP?
Take at some time every day; if more than 3hrs late use back up method (e.g. condoms) for 1wk
What is important to mention to patients who opt for the depot injection of progestogen?
Lowered fertility may persist fro months after discontinuation
If a woman had just given birth, which method of contraception would be advised?
POC; preferable during lactation
What is the MOA of IUDs?
Prevent fertilisation occurring; progestogen IUD also suppresses ovulation and thickens cervical mucus
Does the copper IUD effect fertility once removed?
No
How long may it take for women to become amenorrhoeic when taking the progestogen IUD?
6-12mths
