3 types of barrier method contraception
Condoms, Vaginal Diaphragm(may cause urinary retention), Spermicides(genital irritation)
Contraceptive effects of E & P.
E = fluid retention due to decreased Na excretion, increase hepatic protein production, increase HDL, decrease LDL, increase Thrombosis.
P = mood changes, depression(dec 5HT), androgen fx(weight gain), unhealthy lipid profile
Absolute C/I to steroid contraception
Pregnancy, liver dz, vascular dz, hormone dependent cancer, >/= 35 smoker, uncontrolled HTN, Migraines w/aura, DM w/vascular dz, thrombophilia
Combination steroid contraception types
- E&P oral: decrease PMDD
- Vaginal Ring: constant blood levels
- Transdermal Patch: increases blood levels of E&P by 60% compared to other methods
Progestin only steroid contraception types
- Depo Shot: 3m
- Implant: 3y
- Morning After
IUD Contraception mechanism of action
Blocks sperm transport, stops implantation, destroys sperm
Absolute C/I to IUD contraceptives
Prego, malignancy, salpingitis
*increases the chance of ectopic prego but if you get prego its more likely to be ectopic
How long after ovulation can an egg be fertilized?
12-24 h
How long after ejaculation can sperm survive in the vagina?
24-48h
How does lactation prevent pregnancy?
Elevated prolactin blocks GnRH but only works for about 6months
HOW do E&P prevent prego?
Estrogen blocks FSH thus inhibiting follicular maturation. Progesterone blocks LH thus preventing ovulation
