What is contraception?
The intention of prevention of conception by natural or artificial means.
Contraceptive pill
Contains synthetic oestrogen and progesterone that inhibit FSH and LH.
Hormonal control prevents the development of the follicle.
Morning after pill
Very high concentration of synthetic oestrogen and progesterone- prevent implantation of zygote.
Taken the morning after un-protected sex.
Mini pills
Only contains progesterone.
Thickens cervical mucus to the point where sperm cannot get through.
Coil-Intra Urine Device
Slowly releases oestrogen and progesterone and inhibits implantation.
Must touch the top of the uterus
Vasectomy
Permanent method in men.
Cutting of the sperm duct.
Hysterectomy
An operation to remove a women’s uterus.
Permanent method.
Spermicide
Chemical contraceptive gels, foams or jellies which destroy sperm.
Most effective when used along with a barrier methods.
Physical methods
Sterilisation, IUD, condom, cervical cap, diaphragm, barrier method.
Chemical methods.
