Continuity and change on the Far right Flashcards
JMLP on Immigration cost
cost of immigration in 2007 was at 60 million per annum
How were the immigrants causing problems in France according to JMLP?
taking advantage of the welfare system
national preference needed to be put in place to allow white nationals to get jobs
Evidence of cultural decline according to JMLP
decrease in theatre audiences and visits to national monuments
How was JMLP anti elitist by the turn of the century?
only criticised the rise in multi national corporations
no mention of corrupt UMPS
What did JMLP lack in relation to Republican values?
he makes no mention of uniting a country- what is implied is that the manifesto splits up the nation and concentrates on impact from outside- closed borders
What is the major change in relation to the image of the Party in MLP’s campaign?
she concentrates on her Image and potential as a leader- she dedicates the first 10 references to her
What is striking about the structure of the policy changes that Le Pen creates
it is user friendly and only 16 pages only one of which dedicated to immigration- embeds issues such as racist comments within Republican values so that these issues don’t stand out
The problems of the electorate are more central to her campaign
How do her policies on immigration bare similarities to those of her father?
wants to expel all illegal immigrants and wants to stop all babies not born into French Parents from gaining citizenship
how does MLP attack the opposition more than her father?
she denounces the UMPS and believes they hold an unnecessary amount of control over the system, she thinks they are milking it for their own benefit
Are they economically similar or different, and if so how?
SIMILAR- Marine believes that France is suffocating under the weight of global bank
The Euro is the problem behind the raise in unemployment and other financial problems
How does Marine suggest the Party is against the system?
she uses war language like defending the country from multi-national corporation
How does the party marginalise itself to benefit its growth in support?
has a vastly different economic model which allows it ti portray itself as an anti-system machine - so really there is no sign of de radicalisation in this sense
Three main differences in the image of the Marine and her father
- no longer claims that the Party is far right- says she will take anyone to court who says otherwise
- No more anti-semitism- expelled her father for this in 2015
- Defender of Republican values that stay true to the values of her Party- eg laïcité and sovreignty
Does she acknowledge this difference between the past?
she says she is Part of the new FN
In conclusion how has Marine reworked the image
de-demonised the image of the party whilst not changing the Party, meanwhile she has reworked less essential views
Who was more likely to vote FN in 2012?
Women were almost as likely to vote FN as men
instead of being nationalistic, what tone has MLP taken on?
She has called for all French people to unite no matter gay, non-Christian or a woman
What factor has forced FN to be more inclusive?
Parity and Womens right laws in politics have been enshrined in the Country’s values for years now
How can a niche Party increase its voters by means other than policy alterations?
They can use things such as visual techniques and generally focusing more on the importance of the figure in general
In the election lead ups under the Le Pen candidates have portrayed themselves increasingly like mainstream candidates
What does the name Rassemblement National suggest?
Linked to Gaullism which was centred around the idea of a rally of the People. This stemmed from the aim to rid the country of the factionalism that emerged post Vichy
What faux pas did Sarkozy commit in Grenoble in 2010
any foreigner who tried to stand up to the police and military would take away their nationality, in some cases
What factor has been important in causing Youth votes to rise?
They are bearing the brunt of an economic crisis and are suffering from insecurities in the job market
At what period in the FN’s history did they abandon the traditional conservative badge?
early 2000s and became more liberal which opened them up to a bigger electorate appeal
Between 2007 and 2012 did LePen widen the support base?
No, the support base was not widened, but in areas where support was high such as the young, anti democratic, uneducated male, the vote was increased dramatically
How did MLP criticise the UMP?
She compared them to the collaborators of WW2 saying that they had sold France to globalisation
Has the FN benefited from a decline in Mainstream Politics?
Yes, there has been an evident resurgence for the outsider in light of this
Evidence of no social policy shift which doesn’t support her statement that the FN is a supporter of revamp of the Ve République
the Party opposed the same-sex marriage law passed in 2013 despite MLP having said previously in her speech to the masses that she includes everyone, even gays in her ‘France’
change in tact regarding money between the two generations
she planned to reinstate the Franc which her father hadn’t prioritised but had said would be a last resort
2014 elections confirmed that the FN dominates what section of the vote?
it has become the largest party by far for the socio-economically deprived categories
