Defferre’s efforts to unite the Left
worked independently to mobilise a wide range of the political spectrum this side of the Gaullists - Wrote the programme Horizon 80
He ruled out the negotiations with the PCF
Why did defferre’s project fail?
Suspicions over his motives as the plan stemmed from outside the boundaries of the Political parties
There was also an Ideological struggle with many people supporting Mollet who stayed honest to the Party’s roots
The MRP had been attracted by Gaullist views too
Combined vote of the PS, MRG and centrists in 1974 was
46% which further increased at the European elections a few years later

The expulsion of the MRP from the PS as this way the clerical question could be avoided and consequently an arrangement with the PCF could be more easily arranged

The Socialists had taken much of PSU and the Radicals whilst maintaining a relationship with the MRG which in turn created a clearer division with the PCF
