Continental Drift Flashcards
What is convection?
- Movement caused in a fluid due to heat and density. (dense material sunk, heat transfer occurs.)
- Happens in the mantle
Sea floor spreading
Mid ocean ridges cause underwater mountains
Paleomagnitism
Physical proof of continental drift. (Happens on land)
Curie Point
Magnetite will point to magnetic North once it cools to 570oC
Pillow Lavas
Outside cools, and is molten on the inside. Can also have magnetic properties.
Inclination
Direction of Earths magnetic field lines
Declanation
Angle of deviation b/w geographic north and magnetic north.
Polar-Wander Curve
Suggests that continents that contain magnetic properties have meandered throughout time.
Divergent
Apart (new lava is coming up)
Convergent
Together (being destroyed)
Rough estimate for the distance of seafloor spreading
10mm/year
Earths cross section (Outside –> Inside)
- Crust (Oceanic or continental)
- Moho
- Mantle
- Liquid outer core
- Solid inner core
What does the “Moho” do
Separates the crust from the mantle.
Earth compared to an egg shell (Outer to inner)
- Lithosphere (Brittle)
2. Asthenosphere (white part underneath the shell
Continental Crust vs Oceanic Crust:
Continental: -Less dense -More Si, Al Oceanic: -More dense -More Fe, Mg
