Gold Standard Limitations:
Up selling could cause -ve communication & decreased welfare
Doesnt consider animal factors - age, temperament, general health, env
Doesnt consider human factors - resources, capabilities, preferences, circumstances
Cant do GS -> shame, guilt, anger, dissatisfaction
Standard of Care:
Benchmark determines professional obligations to patients have been met
Importance of Standard of Care
Legal term
Fail to meet standard of care = negligence
Standard of care is not optimal - covers any care from barely acceptable to ultimate optimal care
Guideline
Concise doc to assist decision making case management
Based on current best evidence
Protocol
Formal, unambiguous instructions for situations with known outcome
Should not deviate from protocol
Why are guidelines helpful?
Vet - discuss and dev care based on best evidence
Team - Enable members to have confidence in approach to providing care
Patient - receive care in line with best available evidence
