What should we really consider when seeing who is referring the child to you?
- we really need to think of where we are getting the info from and who is framing the problem
ex: mom might think their child has social anxiety but really the mom just keeps embarrassing him in
Informed consent additions when working with a child and their parents
- parents provide consent
- child under 12 provides assent
- file can be part of a court proceeding if it’s about the custody of a child
Intake interview with a child and their parents
- mostly with parents first, then talk to Sam, and have all of them together at some point
- around 14-15 it’s sometimes awkward to have a family meeting
How do we make interviews with kids more fun?
- incorporate games like Jenga or a puzzle
- can modify games to take moments to share something about themselves
- don’t want it to feel like school, want them to feel comfortable
How can you ask a kid if they have a fear?
- “is there anything you’re afraid of? any big fears?” - you can talk about your own fears
○ “Does it stop you from doing anything?”

Should you provide antidepressants to a child with mild depression?
no!
and for moderate to severe you can consider SSRIs in combination with therapy (12-18 yr olds)
What is the timeline of schooling to become a clinical psychologist?
- Honours bachelor’s degree in psychology (4 yrs)
- Masters-Ph.D/Psy.D./Ed.D in Clinical Psychology (6 yrs)
- Residency in Clinical Psychology (1 year before graduation)
- Supervised Practice (1-1.5 yrs)
