Contemporary Clinical Psych 1 Flashcards
What could psychologists be called in a school setting?
clinical and school psychologists
At the college what is a trait of how you’re registered?
By the age of the person that you’re qualified to work with
- child
- adolescent
- adult
- family
- older adult
- couples
- possibly organizations
who are the school psychologists who work at the school board paid by?
The school board - no cost to the client
Informed consent
- we describe to the client what the assessment will involve and allow them to participate if they are willing to
- discuss confidentiality and its limits: everything discussed is private but there are exceptions
Exceptions to confidentiality:
- If a client is at high risk for immanently causing harm to self or others
- If u learn about anyone 15 or younger who may need protection then you’re obligated to report it to the children’s aid society (could be the client or someone else like a neighbor)
- for a 16 or 17 yr old in Ontario you have an optional reporting possibility - if the client says they we’re sexually abused by a healthcare professional - need to make a report to the relevant college
- if you have capacity (around 12) you can consent to a psychological service yourself and be in charge of your info (unless if in need for protection)
- Healthcare records are subject to court orders, elements of the file can be part of a court proceeding
What is unique for schools regarding consent?
In a school setting, for psychological assessments, it is the parent that has to consent up until 18
Student Files:
- we have direct access to these in-school
- report cards: grades can give an idea but they are not standardized tests
- mainly interested in report card comments made by the teacher
Interviews
- can use structured or unstructured interviews
- discuss personal things - get to know them and different aspects of their life
- homework, friends, sleep, fears, distractibility, substance use, etc…
- At the end, you can decide what you want to do next. Is there any standardized questionnaire to clarify some of her answers
Cognitive (WISC) and Academic testing (WIAT)
- Tells us where the client sits in relation to the general population
- can indicate if there are any cognitive + academic abnormalities (good or bad)
Diagnosis + Case conceptualization
- state the final diagnosis/ese
write a report
- could be short or long
- to get into a different program
- to give to teachers and caregivers
- for Sarah in the future
Intervention Plan
- Provide assessment “feedback” in a language that the client and caregiver would understand
Example: for autism
- Provide assessment “feedback”
- Explaining needs to school staff
- Provide enrichment activities in school and outside of school (for math)
- Social coaching - scaffold the social world
- Connect with other bright youth with similar autism presentation
