First released as a commercial format in the early 80s. Data stored on a CD’s digital information read by a laser. Writable CD drives use a laser to transfer information to a ?-?, whereas commercial CDs use a moulding process to stamp the digital signal onto the ? of the CD.

Digital information’s sampled and converted from the analogue signal into ? data then written onto the CD. Consumer players convert this digital ? into an analogue signal that’s sent to an amp or speaker.

Advantage was the quality of the sound. Because CDs were digital, and the digital-to-analogue conversation ? was high, the quality was perceived as better.

CDs are fragile and can easily scratch, leaving vast sections of data ?
