Valve amps have been around since the earliest days of electric ? (early 20th century), but popular in the 30s as guitarists found themselves being drowned out.
Amplification.
Guitarists would fit ? to their instruments, fed through an amp, to increase the volume.
Pickups.
Valves were used until the late 60s/early 70s when ?-? amps were used. These had ? which were cheaper, smaller and more reliable than ?
Solid-state.
Transistors.

Valve amps tend to clip audio softly, allowing for a warmer ?, and ?-? amps have harder clipping that gives a harsher overdrive.
