Assesment Visit-

After approval assessment a reccomendation is made by FSA vet official
Not applicable to:
primary production for private/domestic use, for private domestic consumption
What hygiene provisoins are required for an operational abbatoir?
Need to comply with requirements in regards to-
Contamination source- air, soil, water
Measures relating to- animal health, hygiene, welfare
What are healthmarks and when are they applied?
Staining on skin
Applied by or under responsibility of the OV when controls have not identified any deficiencies that would make the animal unfit for human consumption
What is the food chain information?
Who is responsbile for obtaining and evaluating the FCI?
FCI includes- disease status, knowledge of residues, movement restrictions
FCI- food business operator responsible for obtaining and evaluating the information
What is the legistation and rules surrounding drug usage and control of residues in the UK?
- Offense to give any veterinarian medicine to an animal unless have marketing authorisation for their use in the UK
- Veterinarian must keep records of thier use
- Can give products under cascade when others not available- must provide an appropriate withdrawal period
- Allowed substances- defined MRL of each product
What body does drug residue surveillance?
FSA
Includes farmed and wild game
Checks for vet meds, pesticides, heavy metals

What extra slaughter step is fone for pigs?
Pigs and Cattle- no corners
Cattle specified risk- tonsils, last 4m of SI, caecum, mesentery
over 12mo- skull excluding mandible, including btain, eyes and spinal cord
Sheep- skull excluding mandible, including brain, eyes and spinal cord
Extra pig step- scalding to open hair follicles and dehairing
What pigs need to be tested for trichinella species?
What are the alternatives to testing?
- Breeding domestic swine
- Wild boars of any age
- All pigs not in offficial premises
Alternatives- cold treatment -37 for half an hour
How is BSE activally surveilled?
Healthy and in EU- no testing
Health non EU over 30mo- tested
Emergency slaughter/Concered ante-mortem, fallen stock:
If EU over 48mo tested, it non EU and over 24mo tested
Who are the enforcment bodies in England/Wales, Ireland, Scotland of abbatoirs?
Ireland- Agriculture and rural development department
England/wales- FSA
Scotland- FSS
