Medication causes of constipation
Anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, levadopa, aluminium, iron, opiates
Management of constipation
Exclude underlying causes, lifestyle medications, enemas, suppositories, bulk laxatives, stool softners, osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives, analgesia
When are enemas used
If impaction is present
When are bulk formers used
Colostomy, diverticular disease, IBS
Eg of bulk formers
Unprocessed wheat bran or ispaghula husk, methycellulose, sterculia, polysaccharide polymers
Eg of osmotics
Lactulose, macrogols, magnesium salts
Eg of stimulants
Bisacodyl, dantron, senna
Eg of faecal softners

What is post op ileus
Failure to pass flatus or faeces, bloating, distension, nausea, vomiting, absent bowel sounds
Management of post op ileus
NBM, daily bloods, correct eletrolyte imbalances, encourage mobilisation, and reduce opiate analgesia
