Conservatism today Flashcards
1st
New Labour1997-2001had devoted itself to devolution, advancement of individual freedom (e.g. Freedom Information Act), but the growth of terrorism prompted a precedence to order, security and safety.
After 2010 there was a growing interest in society and community, reviving Burke’s theory of little platoons – David Cameron tried to foster a ‘bigger society and a smaller state’.
The diminishing appeal of European supranational authority with Brexit showed a yearning among voters for a greater sense of national identity which was central to British conservatism for almost two centuries.
2nd
Similar wishes seen in US and Europe to promote cosmopolitan individualism with change that is more attuned to history, tradition and nationhood.
Conservatism and conservatives is not indivisible (e.g.most conservatives backed EU).
Conservatism in the UK also not confined to Conservative Party only (e.g.BlueLabour links left wing themes of equality and social justice to conservative themes of family,
faith and flag).
Trump in the US echoed traditional conservative critique of liberalism–wishes to protect US economy by curbing free markets and prioritising safety and security over individual
liberty.
Desire to change in a certain way–one that is respectful, not contemptuous of tradition
and continual identity – will always be present and shows no sign of decaying.
