Christian democracy Flashcards
outside UK
Western European nations felt effects of fascism much more acutely which had a huge
effect on psychology of continental conservatives – Germany, France and Italy.
Numerous overlaps with British conservatism; Judaeo-Christian morality as a force for
binding society; hierarchy and authority; social conservatives emphasis on marriage and family life; scepticism towards socially liberal causes e.g. abortion and sexual equality; scepticism towards free market economies; acceptance of enlarged state, public
spending, welfare and Keynesian capitalism.
However, they had a different attitude towards the nation-state;wary of nationalism and patriotism. Amenable to supra-nationalism which was later embodied by the EEC and EU.
British conservatives suspected the aim of Christian democracy conservatism was to eliminate the ‘nation’ and make the ‘region’ the main focus of communal identity – ‘no- nation conservatism’.
