Conserva)on and Sustainable Development Flashcards
“Economic Development”
improvements in efficiency
and organiza)on but not
necessarily increases in
resources in consump)on.
“Economic Growth”
– Material increase in the
amount of resources used.
Sustainable Development
meets the needs of
the present without compromising the capacity
of future genera)ons to meet theirs. Two
central concepts are those of ‘needs’
especially those of the most marginalized in
society (which should be considered first) and
the limita)ons of the environment to respond
to our present and future needs
Sustainable Development
• Combines
economic development and
economic growth:
Situa)on - most of the world does not
enjoy large government landholdings
for conserva)on.
New approaches to conserva)on must
be iden)fied that work with private
landowners.
New approaches
– provide mo)va)ons for conserva)on.
– provide benefits to landowners.
– provide conserva)on protec)on.
– Land trusts
• An agreement with one party (trustee) that agrees to hold ownership of property for the benefit of another party (beneficiary).
• Conserva)on easements
Landowners give up right to develop, build on,
or subdivide lands in exchange for money/lower
taxes/etc.
• Limited development strategies
– Por)ons of private lands are developed while
other por)ons are set aside.
– Oeen improves value of developed land.
• Conserva)on banking
– Previously discussed - preserve species/
ecosystem elsewhere.
• Conserva)on
concessions
– conserva)on organiza)ons outbid extrac)ve use interests. • Bid on logging rights. • Bid on mining rights.
Integrated Conserva)on
Development Projects
Projects that link biodiversity conserva)on in protected
areas (PAs) with local socioeconomic development.
✴ Local people living in or near PAs are given alterna)ve
sources of livelihood that reduce the pressures on PA
resources.
