Consciousness Flashcards
What are the limits with introspection in psychology experiments
Incomplete information, difficult to express in words, subjective experience, unconscious events that we are unaware of
cognitive unconscious
the mental support processes outside out awareness that make our perception memory and thinking possible
blindsight and what does it tell us
the abulity of a person who suffered a lesion in the visual cortex to reach toward or correctly guess about objects despite seeing nothing shows that there are mental processes that escape the consciousness
beneficial to have unconscious control to be automatic
yes bc fast and effortless
Does consciousness guarantee control
Nope just look at the amt of fried chicken bbt i eat and the time i wake up in the mornign
What is the mind body problem
how the mind and body influence each toher, how can mental events trigger a physical event
What are the two broad aspects of consciousness
1) level of alertness or sensitivity which is independent of what they are alert to(related to thalamus)
2) consciousness varies in content
binocular rivalry and what does it show
even though the eyes are seeing the visual input there is an area of the brain that activates when the participant recognizes or is aware of the face while there is another area for the house
so it is not about direct input but also awareness of the input that matter here
experiment about what free will is and whether we have it
Brain activity is present before the decision is seemingly made so it is not the decision that alters the brain activity but the reverse?
Global workspace theory
wokspace neurons that connect one area to another has selective communication powers, and links together stimuli or ideas in dynamic representations to make consciousness
What can the global workspace theory prove
1) working memory because it can explain how we can continue thinking about a stimulus even after the trigger is removed.
2) variations in consciousness like sleep vs awake
what produces melatonin
pineal gland
alpha waves
relaxed and awake waves between 8 and 12 pulses per seconf
beta waves
active thinking waves
delta waves
stage 3 and stage 4 waves 4 waves per sec
