consciousness
one’s subjective experience of the world, resulting from brain activity
automatic tasks
tasks that are so well learned that we do them without much conscious effort
controlled processing
the more time consuming mental processing used when learning new tasks
persistent vegetative state
when a person goes through sleep/wake cycles, but do not seem to respond to their surroundings for more than a month
minimally conscious state
when a person is able to make deliberate movements and may attempt to communicate but have not reached full consciousness
global workspace model
the theory that consciousness arises as a function of which brain circuits are active
split brain
a condition in which the corpus callosum is surgically cut and the two hemispheres of the brain do not receive information directly from each other
interpreter
a team specific to the left hemisphere; refers to the left hemispheres’s attempts to make sense of actions and ongoing events
subliminal perception
the processing of information by sensory systems without conscious awareness
Freudian slip
an unconscious thought suddenly expressed at an inappropriate time or in an inappropriate social context
circadian rhythms
the regulation of biological cycles into regular patterns
suprachiasmatic nucleus
the small region of the hypothalamus that processes information about light detected by the eyes
melatonin
a hormone that ravels through the blood stream that affects various receptors in the body, including the brain
