Consciousness Flashcards
What is consciousness
Self awareness of our body and mind
What are the 2 components of consciousness
- conscious content
- states
what is conscious content
the subjective experiences of your internal and external world. Your “sense of self”
What is states of conciousness
different levels of arousal and attention.
What is blindsight
Engagement in multiple complex tasks can lead to inattentional blindness
What is subliminal stimulation
Exposed to a stimulus, but the exposure is so fast that while the information does get in the brain, it never reaches consciousness. Cannot see it consciously but can still influence and affect our behaviors.
What is subconscious processing?
We are exposed to a stimulus and are aware of it. However, we are not aware of the memories and emotions that the stimulus brings up.
What is attention and why is it important
Complex mental processes that allow us to focus our awareness on a tiny portion of the stimulus around us.
Highly adaptive and essential for survival
what is the cocktail effect
: when in a very noisy place, we manage to focus our attention in a conversation that is important to us. Likely to still pick up our names even though its very loud at the party
what is dichotic listening
Used in experiments to study selective attention. Different messages in each ear, asked to focus on one ear only and repeat to prevent us to focus on other ear. Despite this, we still pick up stuff from other other.
What is the bottom up (passive) response of attention
Stimulus in our environment that grabs and captures our attention because something stands out about it (ex// too loud)
What is the town down (active) response of attention
When we intentionally choose what we are going to pay attention to.
What is change blindness
Engaged with a stimulus but do not notice a change in the stimulus
What is INTENTIONAL change blindness
we are told a stimulus will change, but we still have trouble detecting it
what is visual neglect disorder.
Attention disorder- part of the world becomes non-existant for us- no longer aware of it. However, unconsciously, they may still have some awareness
