Consciousness Flashcards
What are the two types of Consciousness
Phenomenal and Access.
Phenomenal is experiential states, phenomenology, and qualia (what the experience is like)
Access is information available for use in reasoning and report.
(what the information is available.)
What is an example of Phenomenal Consciousness
Change Blindness
What is Access Consciousness?
Access is more computational. Like are you conscious of the time and you tell me what it is.
What is visual Neglect and change blindness in consciousness?
visual neglect tis when you have Phenomenal Consciousness but not access consciousness
What is the case for Blindsight in consciousness?
When they’re blind and don’t have phenomenal consciousness but do have access consciousness.
What is Jackson’s “Mary Problem”?
She’s in a black and white room where she knows all the physical facts.
Leaves the room and sees what it’s like to see red.
Therefore facts about consciousness are not included among the physical facts.
What are the cases against Jackson’s “Mary Case”?
Mary doesn’t learn anything
Mary gains a new ability and doesn’t learn a new fact.
Mary gains a new way of describing a physical fact.
What is the Global Workspace Theory?
Look at all the brain Something is consicous when all the brain sees it.
What is the Higher Order theory?
It states that you need two things. What. first order representation like perception parts. You see a pen. Then you need another part of the brain (the pre-fontal cortex) says I just saw a pin. This is what consciousness is. One part reporting that another part of your brain just attended something.
What is the Recurrent Processing Theory.
Just look at the perceptual parts of the brain for consciousness. You get consciousness when there are feedback loops in the visual perception parts of the brain.
You don’t need activity later parts of the brain are not responsible for consciousness.
