Connectivity methods Flashcards
1
Q
Fibre optics
A
- cabling made from glass that becomes very flexible when it is thin
- light passed through the cable using transmitter
- light travels quickly through the light-reflecting internal wall of the cable
- transmitter in router sends light pulses representing binary code
- when data is received, it’s decoded back to its binary form + computer displays message
2
Q
Copper cable
A
uses electrical signals to pass data between networks.
3
Q
Three types of copper cable:
A
coaxial, unshielded twisted pair and shielded twisted pair
4
Q
Coaxial
A
degenerates over long distances.
5
Q
Unshielded twisted pair
A
made by twisting the copper cables around each other and this reduces degeneration
6
Q
Shielded twisted pair
A
uses copper shielding around the twisted wires to make them less susceptible to interference
7
Q
3G/4G
A
- these can be accessed through a smartphone without a WiFi router.
- data is transmitted through the cellular phone network - enables anyone to connect to the internet as long as there’s a connection available.
- 3G - up to 6 Mbps to be downloaded and 4G for up to 18 Mbps.
