connectivity COMPLETE Flashcards
what do you use a home network for?
to share an internet connection at home
whats a local area network?
LAN conects all the computers in a house so that all resources can be shared
whare are the benefits of using a LAN?
sharing files ad backing them up sharing intenret commection share peripherls(printers) internet telephone services
what do you need to set up a local area network?
a network interface card NIC to cnnect the comuters to the network unless you are usng wifi dongles
whats a router and what does it do?
connects all the computers to the modem by giving them a internal Ip adress so that it knows where to send the data. most internet service providers will give you a modem and a router combined
what are the advantages of a cable connection internet router?
very fast
good security as the user needs to hysically plug the computer into the network with a cable
no/little interference
what are the disadvantages of using a cabled conection to a router/ interent?
cables have to be run froem router to all rooms in the house
installiation is expensive
you need a socket to connect in each room and have to unplug to reconnect if you want to move rooms
what are the advantages of using wireless/wifi connection to an internet router?
no cables/all you need is the router
cheaper
you can acess the network anywhere
what are the disadvantages of usinf wireless/wifi connection to an internet router/
slower
poor security as anyone within a range can use it unless kept secure with a passcode
can have interfrence throught wa;;s and euiptment and distace form router affect it
what are the three menas of connection with home networks?
powerline
cable
wireless
what happens if you do not secure your wireless network?
any one within a range can acess it
whats the importance of netwrok security?
others can acess your connestion and use it at your cost
now can you secure your wirelss netwrok?
passwords encryption media acess controll adress filtering hide the router broadcasting its SSID service set identifyer turn off when not in use reduceing transmitter power
whats encryption?
scrambling data so that only computers with the right key can read it
what are common forms of encryption?
WEP
WPA-PSK
WPA2
how can you not secure your network? common misconceptions?
your firewall or phsically locking the door wil not prevnt people acessing wifi
how can devices connect and communicate?
wifi bluetooth mini usb port GSM-4G firewall port ethernet port
how do the two decives actually connect?
if they both have on eof the ways of connecting.communcating eg.usbport/wifi
they thay will be ableto connect via that given way
how does converging of devices and multifuctional devices help with communication between the devices?
they can perform may tasks so it skips out steps that single fuction devices may have to partake in
if you are using a headset whilst driving to make hands free calls, what two wireless commoniction methods allow this?
bluetooth
3G
what deos a ntewok communciation involve?
transfering bits (ones and zeros) between two devices
what is network performance?
how well the network can transfer bits
define bandwidth
Capacity
the number of bits that can go thought the connectin in 1 second its measure in BPS(bits per second)
define latency
delay
the time in milliseconds between a bit eaving one device and arriving at the other
for streaming vidoes what would a user want their experience to be like?
high bandwidth otherwise the vidoe would kepp on pausing as the computer waits for more bits to arrive
for searching the internet what user experience would want?
low latency as the information needs to arrive quckly
what can slow down data trasfer?
downloading lots of files at once but not using other programs or file such as word or media player at once wont slow it down
what are the most common ways of connecting to the internet?
Wifi hotspots, mobile broadband 3g
