Connective Tissuse Flashcards
Areolar connective tissue
Characteristics: scattered pink collagen and black elastic fibers
Function: helps immune system from infection
Location: beneath epithelial tissue and around many internal organs
Elastic cartilage
Characteristics: black staining and elastic fibers that form like a web
Function: flexibility
Location: external ear
Elastic connective cartilage
Function: helps with flexibility
Locations: external ear
Characteristics: Chondrocytes, lacuna, elastic fibers and perichondrium
Adipose tissue (connective)
Function: heat and storage
Location: sub layer beneath the skin, breast tissue and around the heart and kidneys
Characteristics: large pale cells with a bunch of blood vessels
Hylaline cartilage (connective)
Function: moves vocal cords, opens airways and ease movement of joints
Location: supporting rings in the trachea and cartilage at the end of the bones
Characteristics: clear and glassy and invisible collagen fibers
Dense regular connective tissue
Characteristics: densely packed and wavy
Location: tendon and ligaments
Function: strength in one direction to bind muscle to bone and bone to bone
Dense Irregular connective tissue
Characteristics: random directions
Location: dermis and sheaths around the bone and cartilage
Function: strength in multiple directions to resist tearing
Fibro cartilage (connective)
Characteristics: easily visible parallel collagen
Location: pubic symphysis, intervertebral disc and meniscus of the knee
Function: resist compression and absorb shock
Blood (connective)
Function: transport oxygen and carbon dioxide and nutrients
Location: heart and blood vessels
Characteristics: contains formed elements
Loose connective tissue - reticular
Location: lymph nodes
Function: form for lymphatic organs
Characteristics: black stain branch fibers supporting frame work around organs
