Connective Tissues of the Body Flashcards
Cartilage
a supportive tissue, which consists of chondrocytes and matrix
matrix contains a homogenous substance and collagen as well as elastic fibers
Collagen
consists of protein bodies that produce glue when cooked.
these fibers are found in connective tissues, bone, and cartilage giving them their tensile strength
Epiphyseal cartilage
a disc of hyaline cartilage between the diaphysis (shaft of a long bone containing bone marrow) and epiphyses (ends).
The cartilage allows for bone growth and disappears after growth has finished
Epiphyseal
separation when the epiphysis slips out of line with the rest of the bone. This is most common in the head of the femur.
Fascia
a lubricating layer the both binds and separates tissues in the body
It bundles of muscle tissues and covers the muscles. It is made of connective tissue and collagen fibers. The fascia is an exception. It is woven throughout the body. Interweaves with the ligaments, tendons, and joint capsules.
Ligaments
connect bone-to-bone inhibit the range of motion in the joint
they work to stabilize the joints and so are not elastic. Over stretching can lead to joint instabiliy
Periosteum
the connective tissue covering the bone
It is involved in the thickening of the bone & also the regeneration following a fracture
Tendons
connect muscle to bone and allow for the movement of the joint
if body temperature and muscles tissue is not warmed the tendon can be strained and irritated during dancing
Sesamoid bone
a small bone or cartilage in a tendon a ligament or a joint capsule (ex. patella)
Sharpey fibers
collagenous fibers that extend from the periosteum of the bone or tendon from a muscle into the bone
Synovial fluid
a lubricating and nourishing fluid surrounding synovial joints
Synovial membrane
the lining of the joint capsule that secretes the joint lubrication
