free-floating bone shaped like a horseshoe, supported by ligaments from the skull and muscles of tongue and the mandible
Vertebral Column
different sections and number of vertebra they contain are: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 fused in the sacrum and 2-4 lightly fused in the coccyx
Thorax
includes rib cage and the sternum
fuctions in breathing and to protect the lungs and the heart
highly mobile and 12 ribs attach to vertebrae in the back and sternum in the front
Atlas
first vertebra of the cervical spine
only vertebrae that can move independently from the rest of the spine
Axis
second cervical where skull and atlas pivot together around
