connective tissues Flashcards
functions of connective tissues
support/strengthen - protection - insulation - compartmentalization - transport - storage of fat reserves - immune response
characteristics of connective tissues
cells in ECM - common origin - degrees of vascularity
ECM =
protein fibers + ground substance
ECM
majority of the connective tissue
ground substance
can be fluid/gelatinous/semi fluid - unstructured material between cells - provides a medium for diffusion
fibroblasts
most common type of connective tissue - produce and maintain ECM - coiled up heterochromatin
3 types of fibers
collagen - reticular - elastic
collagen
most abundant - high tensile strength -
reticular
made of collagen with diff. alpha chain - thinner than collagen & creates lattice for other cells to attach to
elastic fibers
very strong - found in skin - can combine into sheaths called lamellae
mesenchyme connective tissue
all cells are the same & undifferentiated -
mucous tissue connective tissue
wharton’s jelly - only present in umbilical cord
loose areolar connective tissue
gel like matrix with fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells - cushions organs
reticular connective tissue
network of fibers - supports other cell types - lymphoid organs
dense regular connective tissue
attaches muscles to bones - bones to bones - tendons/ligaments
