Inflammation of the conjunctiva

The conjunctiva is a thin layer of tissue that covers to inside of the eyelids and the sclera of the eye
What are the three types of conjunctivitis?
Allergic
Bacterial
Viral
What are the main features of conjunctivitis?
- Unilateral or bilateral
- Red eyes
- Bloodshot
- Itchy or gritty sensation
- Discharge from the eye
What signs would indicate an alternative diagnosis to conjunctivitis?
- Pain
- Photophobia
- Reduced visual acuity
What differentiates bacterial and viral conjunctivitis?
Bacterial presents with a purulent discharge whereas viral presents with a clear discharge
When does bacterial conjunctivitis tend to be worse?
In the morning, eyes tend to be stuck together
What does viral conjunctivitis typically present with?
Other viral symptoms (dry cough, sore throat and blocked nose)

Which lymph nodes tend to be affected in someone with viral conjunctivitis?
Preauricular
What should people with conjunctivitis avoid doing?
Wearing contact lenses
How long does conjunctivitis usually take to resolve?
1-2 weeks without treatment
What is the management of bacterial conjunctvitis?
Chloramphenicol (main)
Fuscidic acid eye drops
What is the first line management of allergic conjunctivitis?
Topical or systemic antihistamines
What is the second line management of allergic conjunctivitis?
Topical mast-cell stabilisers
What are examples of topical mast cell stabilisers?
Sodium cromoglicate and nedocromil
