What are cataracts?
The lens in the eye becomes cloudy and opaque
Why is vision reduced in people with cataracts?
This cloudiness makes it more difficult for light to reach the back of the eye (retina), causing reduced/blurred vision
What is the most common cause of cataracts?
Age
What is a possible metabolic cause of cataracts?
Hypocalcaemia
How do cataracts typically present?
Reduced vision
Faded colour vision
Glare- lights appear brighter
Starbursts around lights
What is the main clinical sign of cataracts?
Loss of red light reflex
How are cataracts diagnosed?
Slit lamp examination
What is management of cataracts?
Lens replacement surgery
What is a possible complication of cataract surgery?
Endophthalmitis
(inflammation of the eye)
What is Endophthalmitis?
Inflammation of aqueous and/or vitreous humour
What might you start to see around light?
Halos (difficult to drive at night)
