what are the features of allergic conjuctivitis
- Bilateral symptoms conjunctival erythema, conjunctival swelling (chemosis)
- itch is prominent
- eyelids may also be swollen
- May be a history of atopy
- May be seasonal (due to pollen) or perennial (due to dust mite, washing powder or other allergens)
describe management of allergic conjuctivitis
first-line: topical or systemic antihistamines
second-line: topical mast-cell stabilisers, e.g. Sodium cromoglicate and nedocromil
what are the features of infective conjuctivitis
characterised by sore, red eyes associated with a sticky discharge
bacterial vs viral
features of bacterial conjuctivitis
Purulent discharge
Eyes may be ‘stuck together in the morning)
features of viral conjuctivitis
Serous discharge
Recent URTI
Preauricular lymph nodes
describe management of infective conjuctivitis
infective conjunctivitis - self limiting condition settles without treatment 1-2 weeks
topical abx chloramphenicol
topical fusidic acid alternative snd should be used for pregnant women (x2 daily)
