Conjunctiva: Congenital Abnormalities Flashcards
1
Q
Describe Choristomas?
A
- Normal tissue which is growing in the wrong place
- Limbal Dermoids
o Benign
o Usually located at limbus, encroaching cornea
o Firm, dome shaped, white, elevations
o Few mm to 1cm
o Occur in isolation or as part of congenital syndrome if bilateral – Goldenhar Syndrome - Surgical excision – if causing any problems – specifically worried about amblyopia in children – want px to have a clear visual axis so they don’t develop amblyopia
2
Q
Describe Dermolipoma?
A
- Proliferation of normal fat tissue that have in skin
- Benign tumour
- Temporal bulbar conjunctiva
- Yellow-white solid tumour
- Softer than dermoid due to adipose of fat tissue within them
- Extend posteriorly into orbit
- May be associated w/ Goldenhar syndrome
- Avoid tx due to globe extension – they don’t extend onto cornea to obstruct vision
o The surgery is extensive to remove entire lesion – have to go far back into orbit further into orbit you go, the more damage you can potentially cause
Can cause more harm than good
Can potentially damage other structures in orbit
