As a conjunction: Pues can be used as a conjunction to mean “so,” “then,” “therefore,” or “well.” It is often used to introduce a conclusion or a consequence.
Ejemplo (Example): Tengo mucho trabajo, pues no puedo ir al cine contigo. (I have a lot of work, so I can’t go to the movies with you.)
As an adverb: Pues can be used as an adverb to mean “indeed,” “certainly,” or “of course.” It is often used to emphasize a statement.
Ejemplo (Example): Pues sí, me gusta mucho la pizza. (Indeed, I really like pizza.)
As a filler word: Pues can also be used as a filler word, similar to “um” or “well” in English.
Si
If: This is the most common translation, indicating a condition.
Ejemplo (Example): Si estudias, aprobarás el examen. (If you study, you will pass the exam.)
Whether: Used to introduce an indirect question.
Ejemplo (Example): No sé si vendrá mañana. (I don’t know whether he will come tomorrow.)
Even though: Expresses a concession.
Ejemplo (Example): Si llueve, iremos de picnic. (Even though it rains, we will go on a picnic.)
- Adverb (Si)
Si can also be used as an adverb meaning “so” or “indeed” to emphasize a statement. It usually appears at the beginning of the sentence.
Ejemplo (Example): ¡Si te lo dije! (I told you so!)
- Interjection (¡Si!)
In some cases, si can be used as an interjection to express surprise, disbelief, or annoyance. It’s often accompanied by an exclamation point.
Ejemplo (Example): ¡Si no lo puedo creer! (I can’t believe it!)
Important points to remember:
Como
- Conjunction: Without the accent mark, it can act as a conjunction meaning “as” or “like” when used in comparisons.
- Example: “Me gusta el café como a ti” (I like coffee like you do).
- Preposition: Also unaccented, it can function as a preposition meaning “as” or “in the role of.”
- Example: “Trabaja como doctora” (She works as a doctor).
